Training

MSA-registered volunteer marshals are required to attend regular training days in order to acquire and maintain their marshalling grades. Training is delivered using a modular approach tailored to the individual's needs.

There are well over 100 marshals' training events delivered nationwide throughout the year. For further information, visit the Volunteers in Motorsport website.

Their high level of training means that MSA-registered marshals are held in high regard across the globe. Over 500 British marshals regularly attend a wide range of overseas events each year – at the invitation of the organisers – to share their expertise.

Grading scheme

Progression through the marshalling ranks is managed by the MSA Marshal Grading Scheme.

The scheme has been designed to provide specific skills training to allow an individual to progress from cadet marshalling through to specialist marshalling and even officiating as a Steward or Clerk of the Course.

There are different grades for marshals who work off course in the pits, paddock, assembly area and Race Control, where event communications and administration are based.

Details of the grading schemes for various branches of marshalling can be found in the documents below:

Online rally marshals' training and accreditation

For rally marshals, there is a new online training and accreditation scheme to ensure that everyone has a common understanding of their roles and responsibilities, the management of spectators and how to handle an incident. This should take less than an hour tom complete.

To undertake the online training, click here and either login if you are an existing MSA member, or register if you are new. Once logged in follow the links for ‘Online Training’.
